From reading the two reading there is not much difference to me, besides the format of MLA that Klein and Shackelford approaches the reader with. Both the readings talk about images and how they should relate to the writing and should be something that will persuade the reader more to understand and fell the same way the writer feels. “You can strengthen data supporting your position in an opinion paper if you present it in a graph rather than a narrative format.”(Klein and Shackelford 334) I don’t believe I have ever thought about including an image in a paper besides the cover letter. I guess depending on the type of writing it is if an image present is appropriate or not. I do agree that some images can explain a feeling better than words can because sometimes that image is necessary for the reader. In the article I felt like It was a repeat of another reading assignment that was assigned previously, like the structure of how a paper should be design with Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity; all though in the article gave us a great acronym to remember and try not to forget in the our writing.
In the Article Klein and Shackelford talk about using MLA format in the writing, I think that was very important to mention format styles because in most writing there is going to be a guideline that you must follow and in most classroom setting it is MLA. “Most academic disciplines follow a style guide. In addition, many companies and academic institutions establish their own style guides to supplement established style guides. In most writing courses, as well as other courses in the humanities, we use the Modern Language Association (MLA) style.” (Klein and Shackelford 341) In my profession Athletic Trainer must use the format style of AMA (American Medical Association). This format is difficult because it is similar to AP but many changes; it also does not help that not many people know about this format and that you don’t get much practice for it because Athletic Trainers don’t so much have to write out papers a lot.
Klein and Shackelford do make a valid point about the format in our texts that we as students never realize because we have been in school for so long that it’s like second nature to us. From chapter to chapter we see a lot of repetition and proximity and without these structures reading a text book would be super hard. We look for chapter summaries and where the chapter ends mostly all of these are similar and repeats it’s self throughout the book. I don’t think as students or as readers that we appreciate the structure and the design that texts books hold. I know for me when I make my outlines and notes I use a structure and a design to help me organize and understand the information better.
I like that you talked about the different style you have to write in because I do as well. So I don't feel like a lot of these readings about MLA don't apply as much to me.
